Coronaviruses Disease (COVID-19)
Coronavirus is a Novel disease of the 21st Century that has been discovered recently. There are two different types of highly pathogenic and easily transmissible viruses named Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV). The main reason behind the origin of these viruses is considered as bat. However, the novel Coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, has been developed in bats and another animal called pangolin, according to scientists. By some means this pandemic virus has now been shifted to humans.
The Origin of Covid-19:
The first case of Coronavirus came into limelight on November 17, 2019 when it was reported by South Morning China Post. A 55-year old patient from Hubei province of China was found having this novel virus. Then, after one month, more cases came to the front in Wuhan, lying in Hubei province of China. At first, it was thought that the virus came from a seafood market in Wuhan. However, some earlier cases from December 1, 2019 showed that the virus existed in people who had no contact with the market, so this proved that it was not that seafood market that is the cause of this pandemic, which was mentioned in the journal, The Lancet.
Now, doctors and scientists are trying to trace back to the origin of this pandemic disease that is spreading with pace throughout the world and has caused around 5000 deaths so far. Researchers are hoping that if they get succeeded in tracing back the origin of the coronavirus, they would be able to trace out the root cause of this virus that might be helpful in the making of its vaccine, as the man that has been discussed might not be the first one to have this disease.
Outbreak of Covid-19:
In the beginning, the disease was limited to China where it originated, however, it got spreading across borders in no time making the authorities conscious about its outbreak. Most of the countries step forward and declared to take precautionary measures over the transportation of people across the borders. Nonetheless, in no time the disease has spread in 117 countries with 137,000 confirmed cases. In the wake of the accelerating pace of the spread of the novel virus, the World Health Organization characterized the Covid-19 as pandemic on March 11.
Symptoms of Covid-19:
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) you might have Covid-19 if you have following symptoms.
Shortness of Breath
These are major symptoms and they may vary from mild symptoms to very serious illnesses. If you find yourself or your loved ones, keep social distance and consult a medical specialist as soon as possible. However, according to the CDC if you face difficulty in breathing or shortness of breath; have persistent pain or pressure in the chest; any kind of new confusion; or emergence of bluish lips or face you should consult the specialist because these are also the symptoms found in MERS-CoV cases previously. Furthermore, in case of any other severe case or concerning symptom consult your medical provider because these the list given above might not cover all the symptoms of the disease, as these symptoms have been observed in the cases found until now.
How Coronavirus Spreads?
According to a report of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) there are certain methods through which the disease spreads. They are mentioned below:
There are following ways the virus shifts from person to person:
- It gets spread between people who are in close contact with each other, about less than 6 feet.
- The virus also spreads through respiratory droplets released by a person by the process of coughing or sneezing. Then these droplets may land on the noses or the mouths of the person nearby infecting them with the disease.
- The virus is more easily prone to spread from a person who has not shown or experienced the symptoms of getting the disease, as people are more alert with people showing the symptoms.
A person infected with Covid-19 may touch a surface with a hand that carries the virus. This way, that surface becomes contaminated, when another person touches that surface it shifts to his hand. Upon touching nose, mouth or eyes with the contaminated hand may cause the permanent infection with the disease. However, this way is not considered as the main way the virus spreads.
Cronovirus Cure and Preventive Measures:
There is no vaccine developed as a cure for Coronavirus 2019 disease, therefore, there is no authentic and proven cure for the disease. Nonetheless, if you follow some precautionary measures and guidelines you could save yourself and people around you from this pandemic.
Wash Hands Frequently:
Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or alcohol based hand wash. This kills any virus that sticks to your hands, and frequently or repeatedly washing makes sure that your hands are virus free all the time.
Clean and Disinfect the Commonly Touched Surfaces:
Clean the commonly touched surfaces, like door knobs and handles, light switches, tables and chairs, phones, toilets etc, more frequently.
Maintain Social Distance:
Avoid going in public places and markets unnecessarily. If you work in a place where there are no vacations for prevention against coronavirus, try to maintain distance of at least 1 meter with everyone, regardless of their physical and medical condition.
Maintain Respiratory Hygiene:
Whenever you are out and about in public places, don’t forget to put on a face mask to avoid virus that floats in the air. Although this virus does not remain in the air for long time and settles on any surface, sneezing and coughing of people can cause the virus to land on your mouth or nose.
This process not only saves you from threat but also other people around you.
Avoid Touching your Nose, Eyes, and Mouth:
There could be viruses stuck to your hands that could transfer to your mouth, or nose when you touch them. So, avoid as much face contact with your hands as possible along with washing hands repeatedly.
Seek Medical Care ASAP if you have any Symptoms:
First of all, there is no need to panic in this case. Consult with a medical specialist or seek medical care as soon as you have the symptoms of the disease. These symptoms are fever, cough, difficulty in breathing, and cold.
