In Islamic society, the month of Ramadan carries the most importance compared with other eleven months with regards to its significance and its blessings upon mankind. It is in this month that the Ashab would put more efforts in their prayers (both obligatory and voluntary). In this month, the month of Ramadan, the Holy Prophet (SAW) never returned any beggar empty handed.
Ramadan is the ninth month in Islamic calendar that is also known as Hijri, Lunar Hijri or Arabic calendar. The month starts upon the sight of the new moon on the eve of the last day of Sha’ban and the Muslims offer Taraweeh prayer after Isha’ prayer. The month ends with the sight of the new moon of the month of Shawwal, and the Muslims offer the Eid-ul-Fitr prayer the very next morning as a gesture of celebration of happiness so as to successfully reaping most benefits of Ramadan.
It was in this month that the Holy Quran was revealed to the Holy Prophet (SAW), and the fasting was made obligatory for Muslims. Allah says in the Holy Quran: “Ramadan is the (month) in which we sent down the Quran as a guide to mankind also clear (signs) for guidance and judgement (between right and wrong). So every one of you who is present during that month should spend it in fasting” (2:185)
Ramadan is a month in which a believer could ward-off its sins and become exalted in its rank before Allah. It is an opportunity to reorient oneself with the will of Allah and adopt such habits that ensure His pleasure.
